Learning to Design

I am making it my mission to learn how to make my own WordPress theme. Why? Because I want one that looks like theirs damnit: Jenn & Whitters. Why? Because I love, love, love the way theirs looks. Love it. And damnit, it can’t be that hard. I just spent an hour looking at free WordPress themes and all of them had slider images and all these bells and whistles and I don’t want mine to be nearly that complicated.

So, before the end of this weekend I am determined to sketch out what I want my layout to look like, gather fonts, possibly create a rough header in Photoshop and read all I can about coding a WordPress theme.

…and possible emailing some people for help. You know…tips and tutorials and such.

Any advice is gladly welcome.

I found that the hardest part is usually the “design” portion. Coding is easy because you can Google and there are so many resource now a days to help you out but trying to figure out what you want on a layout is the hardest thing. You can even look into theme frameworks that make things a bit easier like Headway or Thesis but it’ll always be the design part that trips you up.

The layout Whitters has now was design by me and coded by her, lol. She will tell you that she’s fantastic at the coding portion but trying to find the inspiration to figure out what she wants is what gets her every time. Good luck!

I thought that layout looked like your work Ang, it’s very cute!

My best advice when it comes to designing your own theme from scratch is type everything out as much as possible. Just copying and pasting from the codex or tutorials is fast and easy but in my opinion it’s better for the long run if you actually learn the codes and their purpose. Plus it helps with retention and that makes coding themes a lot easier than constantly referencing the codex or another theme.
